"For a writer, its a word. For a composer or a musician its a note. For an editor or a filmmaker, its a frame." Quentin Tarantino
I grew up in Dumont, New Jersey, 20 miles west of NYC, and my love of film and television was instilled in me at a young age. Movie nights with my parents and 2 older brothers were a regular occurrence and where I first fell in love with films like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. When we weren't watching movies we were making them. My father always had the latest home video cameras including one of the very first, the quasar VH5200RQ where you literally strapped the VCR over one arm and held the camera in your hand.
After graduating from Rutgers University in 2003, I started my career in an administrative role for MTV Developement in Times Square. In 2005 my first son was born and 5 days later he had open heart surgery and a pacemaker was implanted. This experience gave me new purpose and inspiration that would set me on a course to support my new family all the while chasing my dreams of becoming an editor.
That same year I continued working at MTV while studying Avid, Final Cut Pro, After Effects and DVD Studio Pro at both the New York Film Academy and School of Visual Arts. A few years later I created a position within MTV Development where I would film and edit a wide range of projects such as casting reels for shows like Laguna Beach and The Hills, pilot presentations and various other development projects.
In 2009 I went freelance and by 2010 I got my first editing credits on a reality series called Destination Design which aired on HGTV. From there I went on to edit The Hidden Hand, an EBE Award winning documentary that explores the possibility of an extraterrestrial presence on Earth. Throughout this period I also found the time to edit 3 independent feature films in order to gain scripted experience.
By this time my family had grown from 3 to 4 after the birth of my second son in May of 2010. Freelancing on non-union reality shows had me worried as the cost of good medical benefits increased. Having already had my sites set on scripted tv and feature films, which are mostly union, I knew that working on union projects would give my wife and I a bit of security in a tough freelance industry.
While still on the East Coast I got involved with American Cinema Editors and the Chair of the Internship Committee Lori Jane Coleman, A.C.E., who would prove to be a wonderful guide and very instrumental in my early success. Once I had the support of my family and loving wife we set our sites on moving to Santa Monica in order to pursue our dreams. About the same time we committed to LA we found out my wife was pregnant with our 3rd child. Kaya Elise Rovetto was born in Los Angeles on March 23, 2011.
On my first scripted series, season 2 of Covert Affairs, I had the pleasure of not only assisting Lori Jane Coleman but teaming up with the talented editor Peter Forslund who I have worked with on many projects. Other notable editors I have worked with include David A. Simmons, A.C.E., Elena Maganini, A.C.E. and Nicholas Erasmus.
In features I have been fortunate to work with many talented editors such as Sam Bauer (editor of Donnie Darko) and Jane Abramowitz (Bedouin).
As an editor my credits grew to include CinemAbility (doc), Fast Machines With Funkmaster Flex (reality tv), Suits S2 Webisodes, LXTV webisodes, Video Game Award coverage for Sony Pictures and many others.
I am currently assistant editing on Suits - Season 2.
